During the 2019 Arctic Race of Norway, Scandic, hotel partner of the ARN, teamed up with a local handball team from Lofoten for a session of plogging. Plogging is an activity mixing running and garbage collection and it was first developed in Sweden. It’s an intelligent and ludic way to take part in the nature preservation of Northern Norway. Thor Hushovd, former world-champion and ambassador of the Arctic Race of Norway, participated in this Race for Sustainability.

“Today, I am plogging, as it focuses on the environment during the Arctic Race of Norway. I am passionate about having a green focus”, he declared.

This operation had a real impact that has been quantified: in one hour, the team had filled 20 garbage bags, so much waste that will no longer pollute the coasts and nature of Northern Norway. After the activity, the participants joined the ARN fans, wearing their recognizable red t-shirts and cheering for the professional riders racing past them.

« Littering in nature and especially plastic has very large consequences for nature and all life in it. I am very excited that the Arctic Race of Norway has this on the agenda and it’s great that Scandic, a hotel chain, is engaging in this too. » said Monica Kleffelgård Hartviksen, project manager for Clean Up Lofoten.
