Alta is the largest city in Finnmark with more than 20,000 inhabitants. Alta is located in an open, yet raw and wild landscape ranging from fjord to the mountain. Alta is an old place where people have lived in ten thousand years, yet a young and modern city. The center includes hotels, cafes and restaurants with locally produced food. The city has an active and internationally recognized cultural life. As a city north of the Arctic Circle Alta has a good climate with cold winters and good summers. The Alta River is world renowned for its Atlantic salmon. The largest can be over 30 kilograms. The Canyon surrounding the upper parts of the river is the largest in northern Europe. On the mountain Haldde in Alta, Norway’s first Northern Lights Observatory was opened in 1912. The area in and around Alta therefore provides a spectacular display of the aurora borealis - the northern lights - throughout the winter.
