TV Coverage to 190 Countries

This year, Arctic Race of Norway is taking a major technological leap as its TV production will, for the first time, be primarily based on mobile networks, with Starlink and RF technology serving as backup solutions. By utilizing 4G and 5G technology, this year's race will showcase the future of live sports broadcasting.

Every year, TV coverage from Arctic Race of Norway is distributed to around 190 countries, with more than 183 broadcasting the race live. This places extremely high demands on quality and reliability throughout the entire transmission.

"TV production is essential for showcasing some of the world's best cyclists, the fantastic atmosphere among spectators, and the spectacular scenery of Northern Norway. At the same time, we are constantly striving to develop the event. This year, we are taking a major step by moving large parts of the TV production onto the mobile network," says Tom Høgli, CEO of Arctic Race of Norway.

Telenor Laid the Foundation

The new production solution has been developed in collaboration with Telenor, which has also carried out extensive upgrades to mobile coverage along this year's route. "Our goal at Telenor is to provide a mobile network that performs reliably when large numbers of people gather, including at major events such as Arctic Race of Norway. It is inspiring to see how extensive 5G deployment is also enabling entirely new ways of producing live television. This demonstrates the opportunities that modern mobile networks can provide," says Bjørn Amundsen, Head of Coverage at Telenor.

A More Sustainable Production

The new production model also offers significant environmental benefits. Among other advantages, the solution means that TV production no longer has to be carried out from production facilities located along the race route. This reduces the need for personnel to travel to Norway, while also significantly lowering the number of hotel stays, flights, and vehicles required.

"We want Arctic Race of Norway to be a platform for innovation while also taking responsibility for reducing the event's climate footprint. If this solution performs as expected, it represents an important step toward a more sustainable way of producing international TV broadcasts," says Høgli.
