Gildeskål

In Gildeskål, you will find wild seas, towering mountains, and a relaxed atmosphere.

From the outermost wave-washed islets in Fleinvær to the high-lying plateau landscapes in Láhko National Park, you will encounter nature, culture, and history that together form the Gildeskål community with just under 2,000 inhabitants.  At the Gildeskål church site, you can visit our medieval church from the 12th century. Here, you will learn about church customs, religious life, and community life through eight centuries. You can also explore saint traditions from the Catholic era.

Creative Gildeskål residents continue to express their culture through design, architecture, food, and local products to this day.  For the adventurous, there are countless hiking trails winding through dramatic landscapes, including the iconic Sandhornet, which offers exceptional panoramic views from its summit.

With a mix of pristine nature with a national park, exciting business ventures, and historical treasures, Gildeskål is an ideal area for those seeking an authentic northern Norwegian experience.  The sea as a resource has always sustained vibrant communities along the coast of Gildeskål. One of our early export products was dried fish. The sea continues to play a major role in community development, and aquaculture is now an important industry for Gildeskål. We offer education in aquaculture and fisheries in Gildeskål, and for those wanting to learn more about the aquaculture industry, we recommend a visit to the Salmon Center, an excellent exhibition facility for salmon production. Power production is another important natural resource. Gildeskål is a major producer of clean hydropower. When some of the mountain lakes were regulated, roads were built into the mountainous areas, providing unique access to the highlands for the local population. Here you will find the gateway to Láhko National Park. The name is Sami and describes the nature of the area. Large parts of the national park lie on a high mountain plateau above the treeline, with a very special karst landscape, featuring intriguing rock formations, caves, and stone bridges.
